Top 10 Ways Your Shower Can Improve Your Life

I’m going to keep it nice and ‘clean’ here.  Get it?  So won’t be touching on…well touching on.  With that being said, let’s just get the obvious one out-of-the-way first.

1. Cleans Your Mind & Body

It goes without saying that scrubbing the dirt and grime of the day off of your skin will obviously clean your body.  That was an easy one.

2. Helps Your Creativity

How many times have you been in the shower and had an ‘ah ha’ moment?  Various Studies suggest that doing something monotonous like showering will often lead to creative ideas or epiphanies.  This is also known to happen in the bed or on the bus as well, something Psychologist R. Keith Sawyer refers to as ‘the three Bs’.

He says that “when we take time off from working on a problem, we change what we’re doing and our context, and that can activate different areas of our brain”.  Makes sense, right?  When you’re calm and free from worry it’s logical that your mind is at its highest point of freedom.

The next 5 Involve Hydrotherapy which involves “the use of water in various forms and in various temperatures can produce different effects on the different system of the body”.  The preferred method for the suggested hydrotherapy is listed in bullet point below.  The best way to do this is to leave the cold water running the whole time and just adjust the hot water.

The Hot Cold Shower

  • Finish showering as usual
  • Stay under the water and get it as cold as you can bear for 30 seconds
  •  Now get the water as hot as you can bear for 30 seconds
  • End with the cold water on more time

Now that you have completed the brief hydrotherapy ritual, you can reap the remaining  4 benefits of showering.

3. Reduces Stress

According to this study from Science Direct, the hot/cold method showed an increased tolerance to stress in all 10 subjects involved.

4. Strengthens Immune System

According to this study from, The US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, taking daily cold showers increases the number of disease-fighting white blood cells.  When your body gets cold it immediately jumps into action and activates your immune system to warm you up.  The end result is more white blood cells.

5. Improves Blood Circulation

Cold water sends your arteries into overdrive.  Again this is an attempt to heat your body up.  This results in stimulated blood flow.  Great news for someone suffering from poor circulation.

6. Improved Skin

Dr. Jessica Krant, M.D.  says, “icy-cold or lukewarm water both have their benefits. Excessively hot water will strip healthy natural oils from your skin too quickly.”

7. Improves Hair

According to Dr. Abraham Armani in this article,  “The cuticle is the outermost part of the hair and resembles the shingles on a roof, opening and closing depending on the temperature of the water you use when you wash your hair.”

She goes on to say,  “hot or warm water separates the overlapping cells of the cuticle, allowing the shampoo to penetrate the hair’s shaft deeper.  A cool hair rinse, on the other hand, will remove excess product without stripping away all the moisturizer ingredients.”

8. Helps Burn Fat

Cold water helps in the creation of brown fat cells which are better than white fat cells.  The brown fat cells create heat and burn energy, assisting in fat/weight loss.

9. Speeds Up Recovery

What do you usually do to relieve the pain of bumps and bruises?  No besides the medication!  You probably ‘ice it’ right?  That drop in temperature in your sore spots increases your  ‘glucose uptake’.  This helps speed up the recovery in your tissue. It’s very scientific.  Here’s the X’s and O’s for those interested.

10. Helps You Fight Depression

Cold showers stimulate your nervous system and increase endorphin levels in your blood, according to this 2008 study.  As you may know, endorphins are chemicals in your brain that help relieve pain and induce feelings of pleasure or euphoria. They play an important role in the brain’s reward system, which includes activities such as eating, drinking, sex, and maternal behavior.  Next time you’re feeling down, you don’t need that bottle of booze or drugs.  You don’t even need your sweetheart.  Just take a cold shower.  Hey, get it!  “Take a cold shower”.  Now I get it.

There you go 10 ways, taking a shower can improve your life.  Now go get your towel.
