Originally this was titled, “You Could Cure Cancer”, but after reading a Medium article by Douglas Rushkoff titled, Survival of the Richest I decided that I was possibly aiming too low.
I guess those Google suggestions come in handy sometimes. Almost worth relinquishing our privacy. I kid, I kid…IT IS NOT WORTH RELINQUISHING OUR PRIVACY. Sorry, my free thought is acting up again.
In the aforementioned article, the author describes an interesting Q&A session between him and “five super-wealthy guys — yes, all men — from the upper echelon of the hedge fund world.” You’ll understand the meaning of all of this backstory by the time you reach the end of this article (blog post, whatever). Just make sure to read all the way through.
While writing for Tizzime, I keep it simple and niche. Most articles have a base or nucleus containing two main talking points; TIME and MONEY. It’s very interesting how closely related these two entities are.
Sometimes I even think of exploring my theory that they are two sides of the same coin, something like Batman and The Joker. I’ll get back to that another day. Right now let’s talk about YOU saving the world.
The Price is Life
I created Tizzime out of a feeling of necessity. After going back and forth for years asking myself, “where is my life going?” or worried that I am running out of time, I realized that I had to find a solution to this problem. After reading enough psychology and philosophy articles and books to drive myself clinically insane, I realized that the solution was very simple.
I needed more time and to get more time I needed more money. Along the way, I figured hey, why not help others do the same?
Why would I need more time you ask? For the same reason, roughly 99% of us need more time; TO ACTUALLY LIVE LIFE. It doesn’t take a study or an expert opinion to confirm that we spend a large portion of our lives at work. Just think about a 40-hour workweek. That’s about 8 hours a day, 5 days a week if you’re lucky.
Anyone who works within those hours or above will nod their heads when I say that, by the time you finally get out of work you’re just about spent. Done. Exhausted. Finished. If you have kids or a second job you’ll need the little bit of gas left in your tank to make sure the car keeps running smoothly if you know what I mean.
If we can agree on the fact that we spend way too much of our lives working then you should continue reading. If you don’t quite agree I have something for you as well.
Let’s say you’re a good working class, blue-collar type, but you’re making an above-average hourly salary. Have you ever asked yourself if you’re actually getting paid what you’re worth?
Let me ask you this…how much is your life worth? How much is beating your body and or mind up on a daily basis worth to you?
Would you cash in 10 years of your life for $100,00 a year? It’s a little different when you think about it like that huh?
Let’s be realistic. The man or woman signing off on your checks are the ones that have a logical opportunity to live a truly fulfilling life. Helping themselves and those they love.
Whether they choose to or not is their decision. You, on the other hand, are destined to consume your mind with the repetitive responsibility of maintaining your lifestyle or providing for yourself and your family. Some may say the person at the top of the pyramid has these same responsibilities. I say; NOT SO MUCH…
“They were amused by my optimism, but they didn’t really buy it. They were not interested in how to avoid a calamity; they’re convinced we are too far gone.”
Free Your Mind
Let’s revisit that article, Survival of the Richest. Douglas Rushkoff spent an hour talking with 1 Percenters, as some would call them, and all they cared about was what they called “The Event”.
Douglas states, “That was their euphemism for the environmental collapse, social unrest, nuclear explosion, unstoppable virus, or Mr. Robot hack that takes everything down.” Let me ask you how many times a day YOU worry about “The Event”?
You see the difference between you, me, and a filthy rich billionaire is
Did you know that most of the “brilliant minds” in human history experimented with drugs? Why do you think that is? Why would Steven Jobs or Bill Gates dabble in LSD? As the great female group of the 90s En Vogue once said, “free your mind and the rest will follow”.
Yes, I know that song was about prejudice, but I think it still applies here. Prejudice is just one of the many debilitating obstacles keeping our subconscious from allowing us to reach our full potential.
Imagine you didn’t have to worry about how the mortgage was going to get paid or how you’re going to pay for your daughter’s wedding. There are so-called “rich” people right now who would be broke if their college loans were due in full today.
If you had enough money to BUY TIME think about the possibilities. Yes, I said BUY TIME. It’s possible. What do House Keepers, Dog Walkers, Assistants, Baby Sitters, or any other type of Employees have in common? They all provide a service that BUYS the boss TIME. What could you do with years of free time to think, huh?
The great inventor Thomas Edison once said, “I haven’t failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” You’ll need a lot of time and money to find that many ways that don’t work. Am I right? Yes..stop…think about that. Let it settle in there and wake something up.
With enough “free thinking” you could; discover the ultimate renewable energy source, invent a battery that lasts for years, produce an unlimited food source, fix the ozone layer, reverse global warming (do they even call it that anymore?), CURE CANCER or maybe even prevent “The Event” from even happening.
By doing the last one, you’ll literally SAVE THE WORLD! So, Douglas Rushkoff I ask, should you ever come across these selfish billionaires again please let them know, it is not too late, that we are not “too far gone”, but if I am wrong then they are the ones to blame.
People with as much MONEY and TIME to sit around trying to figure out how to help themselves surely have the resources to try to fix the catastrophic inevitability that they fear. These guys should probably take Mr. Rushkoff’s words of advice with a pinch of optimism.
After all, revenge is a dish best served cold. What’s going to happen when things go south and you need to depend on the same people you treated like crap when you had ample opportunities not to?
If by any chance one those or any other ELITISTS, read this article (blog, whatever) before “The Event” occurs, then I recommend watching a few episodes of Doomsday Preppers. Actually, I recommend you watch them all until you can understand what a bunch of money and no soul is worth during an apocalypse.
I’m serious, you could save the world. So could I, but first we have to free our minds. What do you think? Leave a reply in the comment box below.
